Laura Lee helps select inspiring stories from the pandemic honoured in a new book

Thursday 15 July 2021

Our Chief Executive, Dame Laura Lee, who was invited to join the judging panel last year, helped to select the most inspiring stories from hundreds of entries from both sides of the Atlantic.

The unsung heroes from the pandemic have been honoured in a new book by leading national biographer, StoryTerrace.

The stories include a selfless veteran delivering vital medicine and a London bus driver who kept the capital moving throughout the coronavirus pandemic, though the panel picked 94 year-old activist, Opal Lee as Leading Hero, after her efforts culminated in ‘Juneteenth’ becoming a U.S national holiday.

Dame Laura said: During the coronavirus crisis we have heard many stories from our visitors of people and communities coming together to help friends and neighbours who have been shielding or are unable to get out for various reasons.

We understand the need for support and community, they are central to everything we do for people with cancer in our centres, so it is fantastic to be highlighting these amazing people through the StoryTerrace book.

It was wonderful to have been asked to be part of the judging panel.

The Unsung Heroes book, sharing the stories of 25 of the finalists, is currently available to purchase on Amazon for £12.99, available in e-book and hardback formats.
