Getting ready for treatment – new prehabilitation workshops launch in Scotland

Monday 11 April 2022

Working with the Scottish Government on a two-year pilot project, we are helping people who are newly diagnosed with cancer to get the best possible start to treatment.

Our new film (above) explains how people in Scotland can ‘get ready’ for what’s ahead after a cancer diagnosis.

Evidence suggests that providing people with dietary, exercise and psychological support at the earliest opportunity offers the best chance of treatment success and helps people feel better about themselves, feel more in control and reduces stress.

With the help of Maggie’s expert staff, people attending the workshops will be encouraged to make positive lifestyle changes.

Maggie's Chief Executive, Dame Laura Lee, said:

"We are delighted to be able to offer our support to more people at the start of their cancer experience and to help people understand the benefits of making lifestyle changes before treatment begins.

We know that pre-habilitation - effectively preparing people for what to expect - has so many benefits including reducing the length of stay in hospital and post-treatment complications. It also improves recovery, fitness, nutrition and brain function, while also helping people to have a better quality of life.

Our new pre-habilitation programme encourages people to take an active role in their emotional, nutritional and physical health.

Gentle exercise, eating well and emotional and psychological support are already aspects of the Maggie's core programme of support – but this usually comes after the person has started treatment. This new project will ensure people newly diagnosed with cancer find the support they need sooner.

We deliver our pre-habiliation support in partnership with the NHS, and ensure each person's experience is personalised to their own needs.

The workshops will also be suitable to those who have already started treatment as well those not receiving active treatment.

Of course, this is also an introduction to Maggie’s and all of the other evidenced-based support we offer."
