Maggie’s in Cheltenham can now offer more support thanks to a new extension made possible thanks to key supporter The Julia Rausing Trust.
The additional space will allow Maggie’s in Cheltenham to help many more people living with cancer as well as family and friends.
Architecture and design
The original centre was designed by renowned architect Sir Richard MacCormac of MJP Architects with a garden from landscaper Dr Christine Facer Hoffman, and opened in 2010.
The extension has been designed by Metropolitan Workshop and Dr Christine Facer Hoffman has refreshed the garden design.
The centre will offer expert psychological, emotional and practical support to more people with cancer, as well as family and friends, across the Cheltenham area.
Offering an expanded programme of support to even more people
Our Chief Executive Dame Laura Lee, DBE, said: “I am delighted to be able to celebrate our Cheltenham centre now having so much more additional space.
“We will now be able to offer an expanded programme of support so that even more people from across Gloucestershire will benefit from Maggie’s expertise and care at possibly the hardest time of their lives.
“Maggie’s is there for everyone who needs it, and we are free with no appointment or referral necessary.
"We know this makes a huge difference to helping people cope with their diagnosis – from getting ready for cancer treatment, help with potential side-effects, support after treatment, providing benefits advice or coping with advanced cancer.
“I am so grateful to everyone who has made this happen, particularly The Julia Rausing Trust who are such incredibly generous supporters of Maggie’s.”
The new building is so welcoming
Abbi, 49, has been visiting Maggie’s in Cheltenham for support since she was diagnosed with cancer.
She said: "Maggie's has been invaluable during my cancer treatment and recovery.
"It provides a safe space for my husband to meet and talk to other partners of people with cancer, while also giving me the opportunity to speak with others with a diagnosis.
"I also have one-to-one time with the amazing staff, all in comfortable surroundings, and join group therapy sessions.
“The new building is so welcoming and provides an amazing space for so much fantastic support.”
A vital resource for our patients
William Cleary-Gray, Director of Improvement and Delivery of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It’s wonderful that Maggie’s in Cheltenham is now able to support even more people thanks to the new extension.
“We know what a vital resource Maggie’s is for our patients. It is also though important for our staff to know that there is somewhere where people can get the support they need while facing a cancer diagnosis.”
Supporting people across Gloucestershire
The centre will continue to work closely with staff at Cheltenham General Hospital to ensure people living with cancer, as well as their family and friends, across Gloucestershire will know to visit the centre for support.
There are approximately 5,000 new cancer cases in Gloucestershire every year.
Maggie’s would like to thank all generous individuals, trusts and foundations who contributed to the project.
