Maggie's, North Wales

Feeling immediately comfortable with a cancer support specialist at Maggie's, Sam was able to open up and get the support she needed.

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on 4th July 2023, which spread to the chest wall and my lymph nodes.

To fight the cancer I had 6 months of chemotherapy, a mastectomy, lymph node removal, 3 weeks of radiotherapy and 12 months of immunotherapy.

After my operation, I struggled most mentally - my whole body by that point had changed. I was bald, I'd put weight on from the steroids, and I'd had a part of my body removed.

I couldn't look in the mirror as I didn't recognise myself anymore.

Hearing about Maggie's from my nurse

I went to see my breast care nurse to have my stitches removed, and she saw how much I was struggling. She suggested I went to Maggie's.

When I arrived at Maggie's, I was greeted by a cancer support specialist. She sat with me and I felt strangely comfortable straight away, so I just poured my heart out.

She gave me support and reassured me that how I was feeling is all completely normal.

From that day I went for numerous conversations and support with the cancer support specialists and I'd leave feeling lighter.

As my treatment was coming to an end, I joined the 'Where now?' support group. This support is so important at the end of treatment, as this is when you feel the most lost and confused.

The support from Maggie's makes you feel less alone and gives you the tools to take back your life.

New Maggie's centre in North Wales

Having a Maggie's centre in North Wales is going to help so many people feel less alone at a scary time, provide a safe place for patients, family and friends.

There is so much more than just the mental support that they provide. They have a benefits advisor, host Look Good Feel Better courses, wig fittings and so much more.

Maggie's has been a great support for me, and I am so happy that other people that may not be able to travel to as far and will be getting the emotional support and a safe place to feel all the emotions they want to feel without judgement.
