Wirral – architecture and design

Carmody Groarke has designed the new interim Maggie's Wirral. 

It is one of the first temporary Maggie’s centres and will work with the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre to serve residents of Merseyside and Cheshire living with cancer.

The building

Carmody Groarke’s design incorporates seven existing structures arranged to take advantage of the magnificent panoramic views over the Wirral farming fields. 

The structures, including the 11 metre long ‘London Dresser’ commissioned by the Mayor of London for the London 2012 Olympics celebrations, are enclosed by a singular envelope of fibre glass panels.

The composition creates a mixture of internal and external spaces which frame secluded gardens designed around patterns of care, areas for psychological support, therapeutic activity, workshops, relaxation, and respite.

The enclosed gardens will also offer visitors a diversity of plants and flowers to cultivate and enjoy. Rooms inside the structures will be lined with natural materials, ensuring a low-impact and sustainable construction process.

The architect — Carmody Groarke

Carmody Groarke is a London-based architectural studio established by Kevin Carmody and Andrew Groarke in 2006.

In 2014 Carmody Groarke won the RIBA Regional Award and the RIBA London Small Project Award, both for their Filling Station.
