If you are living with cancer, or have a loved one with cancer, then you might be concerned about the changes to benefits system recently announced by the government.
While you may feel worried about the benefits you are claiming or due to claim because of cancer, we can support you and help you navigate any future changes to the benefits system.
1. How will the proposed changes affect me?
Many people with cancer are eligible to receive financial support if the effects of their diagnosis or treatment means they are too unwell to work.
The most common benefits people with cancer claim are:
- Personal Independent Payment (PIP) or the Scottish equivalent Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
- Universal Credit (UC)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
These benefits are all part of the government’s proposed welfare reforms, which may mean that the amount you’re entitled to could change.
2. When will the changes come into effect?
Be assured that there will be no immediate change to the benefits you currently receive.
The plans are currently in consultation and the current proposals may never go ahead.
If they do go ahead, the changes will not start to be implemented until April 2026. These timings may vary based on where you live in the UK.
3. How can I get help claiming benefits?
For now, please continue submitting claims, and if you have any questions or concerns, just come into to your nearest Maggie’s and speak to our benefits advisors who can support you.
