How to write your will

Having an up-to-date Will is so important – it means the things you leave behind go to the people and causes you care about, giving you peace of mind. It also helps your loved ones know what your wishes would have been, so they don’t have to make difficult decisions.

Writing your Will

It’s important to note that there are different laws in the different nations of the UK when it comes to Will writing, but by working with a Will writing professional, they can ensure your Will adheres to the laws where you live.

You can write your Will in a number of ways; through a lawyer, a professional Will writer, via your bank, or you can write your own Will.

  • Lawyers: This may be a solicitor or chartered legal executive; there are many lawyers who specialise in Will writing.
  • Professional Will Writers: Professional Will writers are not qualified solicitor or chartered legal executives, but can offer professional Will writing services.
  • Banks: Your bank may offer Will writing support, so you may wish to enquire with them & make an appointment; this service may not be free of charge.
  • Write your own Will: You can write your own Will if you wish to do so; you may wish to seek advice as your Will is a legal document and it’s important to ensure your Will is valid.

Types of gifts

There are different options for the type of gift you can leave in your Will:

  • A residuary gift: A percentage share of your estate once all other gifts and expenses have been settled. This is the most valuable type of gift as it retains its value over time.
  • A pecuniary gift: A fixed sum of money – this can be any amount you choose.
  • A specific gift: This is a specific item and can include items such as jewellery, stocks and shares or property.
